"Do It Right the First Time!"

"Do it right the first time!" may be Holmes on Homes' motto, but it is probably used by papa k just as much. And thank goodness for that!

I can't think of anything worse than water leaks, especially when there are two units below us. Papa k put Holmes' motto to practice when building our shower with six water tight layers.

Floor:
  • vapor barrier
  • pre-pitch = 1" cement
  • 40 mm rubber membrane
  • pitch = 1.5" cement
  • tile (still to be installed)
  • grout (still to be installed)
Walls:
  • fiberglass insulation
  • vapor barrier
  • durarock fiber board
  • waterproofing
  • tile (still to be installed)
  • grout (still to be installed)

The pink is waterproofing paint.

Bathroom Progress

Papa k and Pete are making a lot of progress on the bathroom. A once tight bowling alley bathroom now has some great space and architectural elements. The wall between the bathroom and former laundry room/kitchen was taken out to expand the bathroom, which is now the toilet and shower area.

The knee walls from the shower create some privacy for the toilet.

Shower with a seat.

Trying to figure out where to put the clawfoot tub. The opening into the "room" on the left is where the wall used to be.

Hardly Just Hardware

These cabinets aren't like the ones we had in St. Louis where we could get by without hardware for awhile. These cabinets make hardware a necessity for functiong, which is great because we have hardware and we love it! High-end looking, heafty pulls and knobs from Restoration Hardware. The hardware is a perfect addition for our "sheek cottage" look. (Yes, we are now attempting a "design.")

Vain For Our New Vanity

We purchased our vanity yesterday; and I'm so excited! We spent hours designing a KraftMaid (because we love KraftMaid!) vanity this weekend "designing" our vanity - only to discover that ONE base cabinet (with a couple bells and whistles ... okay, maybe more than a couple) was more than $800!

Then ... we stumbled upon a brand new, 1/3 the regular store retail cost, beautiful ... vanity at the Restoration Hardware outlet. So excited!

Finally, we get to spend money on some of the fun stuff! ;)

Mixing and Matching

"Backsplashes are the hardest tiles to pick out," said the owner of Best Tile. And it has definitely been the most difficult for us. We started with dark, moved to medium and ended on white/gray. We just ordered 3"x6" carrara tile for a light, brick looking backsplash.

Dirty Demo

As if we didn't feel dirty enough living in the mess ... it's now onto the bathroom. There's nothing like showering in a mess. But it is very exciting that we are onto a new room!

Countertops!
